SPRING & FALL HORSE DRIVES
Welcome…
Join John Summers and the crew of Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit as we drive our herd of horses and mules between our winter pastures and our summer headquarters in Mammoth Lakes, California. This old-time working trail drive follows historic trails with long, strenuous hours in the saddle at a rapid pace.
We camp out along the trail and enjoy hearty, delicious chuck wagon meals. Evenings are spent around the campfire enjoying cowboy entertainment and camaraderie. Friendships develop as we share experiences together in the saddle and relaxing in camp. At noon break the lunch wagon meets the drive for a buffet meal along the trail.
You don't need to be a cowboy, but basic western riding experience is necessary. Trail riding experience or prior riding lessons covering trotting and loping are advised. Riders are a working part of the trail crew and will be spending long, hard hours in the saddle. Confirm that you are in good health and physical condition before the drive. Our competent staff are there to answer questions anytime during the drive to help you improve your riding skills and knowledge. The mechanics of driving horses will be discussed. Your horse and western saddle are assigned and matched to you for the Horse Drive. You may bring your personal Western saddle, although the Head Wrangler will have final approval of its use.
Bring a warm sleeping bag (evenings are cool), sleep pad and tent. Pack your gear in a stout, soft duffel bag. Limit each duffel bag to 30 pounds. Label your tent, sleeping bag and all duffel with your name.
Dress in rugged, cowboy attire and plan to layer clothing for cool evenings and warm days. Musical instruments are welcome. Don't forget your camera!
We look forward to sharing this unique western experience with you and enjoy meeting new friends as well as welcoming old ones.
